The money will need to be laundered

(From Lebanon Daily News) A 43-year-old Tennessee woman is accused of trying to steal $5,000, but that's not the interesting part of the story; police say Christie Black hid the cash in her rectum. Black's boyfriend told police he set the cash and some medication out as a trap last week because he suspected she'd been stealing. According to police, the woman became sick and threw up some of the pills, which were partially dissolved, and was bleeding severely. She was taken to the hospital, where the $5,000 was discovered and removed.

Williamson heroes to be honored

Full Life Assembly of God will take time to honor some local heroes at a HOPE Award Service on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.  Featured guests include members of the local Williamson County Sheriff department, the Franklin Police department and the Franklin Fire department. A member of each department has been selected by their peers and commanders to receive recognition during this event. The following recipients will be presented with the HOPE Award: Corporal Keith Bennett/Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, Officer Clayton Cates/Franklin Police Department and Firefighter Rob Thomas/Franklin Fire Department.

The HOPE Award is a special recognition of emergency personnel who have excelled in their job and in some unique way have given hope to their community. “We wanted to find a way to say thank you to those who give of themselves in our local emergency service departments,” says the church’s Lead Pastor, Nick Serban III.

During the HOPE Award Service, donations will be made to charities chosen by each of the departments as another way to say thank you and to give hope to those in need. Charities will be selected by each recipient. Many local businesses have also contributed toward gift packages that will also be presented to the HOPE recipients totaling over $5,000.

Guests are welcome to attend this event. Come early for a good seat. Full Life Assembly of God is located directly across from the Franklin Post Office at 813 Oak Meadow Drive. It was formerly the Franklin Motor Sports Sales and Service Center.

(From WTVF, Channel Five news)  Charges have been placed against the man who shot his estranged girlfriend and another woman inside a Madison optical store, and then turned the gun on himself.
Police said Thursday that arrest warrants have been issued against 30-year-old Charles Talley for attempted murder, aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment, and an order of protection violation.
The incident started inside the Visionworks at 1701 Gallatin Pike around 2 p.m. Wednesday when Talley walked into the business and confronted a woman with whom he had a relationship. She was identified as 26-year-old Ronkeisha Briley.
After a short time, police said Talley opened fire, hitting Briley multiple times. She was able to flee into the back of the business.
A 23-year-old female employee suffered a minor graze wound to the leg. She was treated and released from the hospital.
Witnesses told police Talley was driving a maroon Pontiac.
Two officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were very close to the scene when the call went out from dispatchers. They were able to spot Talley's vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot.
After turning on their emergency lights and siren, officials said Talley turned on his hazard lights and pulled over.
Before officers were able reach the suspect, police spokesperson Don Aaron said Talley pulled out a semi-automatic weapon and shot himself in the head.
Sky 5 HD aerial video showed signs of at least one gunshot through the vehicle's sunroof.
Talley survived the gunshot.
"He was still conscious and alert when the officers approached. The officers gave him commands to exit the vehicle and get on the ground. He complied," said Aaron.
Talley and Briley were both transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Both remained in critical, but stable condition on Thursday.
The other female victim was transported to Skyline Medical Center.
Nearly two dozen marked and unmarked police cars responded to the scene.
Gallatin Pike was closed in both directions from Myatt Drive to Alta Loma Road while officers conducted an investigation into the incident.
It was not the first time Talley was in trouble with the law. He was convicted earlier this summer for punching Briley.
Talley was sentenced on July 15 to 11 months 29 days in jail. Officials said all but 30 days of the sentence were suspended.
Briley took out an order of protection against Talley in July; it was for one-year and was still active at the time of Wednesday's shooting. The estranged couple has a child together.
The police affidavit for the incident said he had a prior conviction for domestic assault in 2009 against a different victim.
Talley was also charged with the murder of 20-year-old Joshua Clark in May 2002. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
He was sentenced to 15 years, at least some of which was served as part of a community corrections program.
Talley was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a weapon in 2010. He was sentenced to 18 months behind bars, but part of his time was probated. His criminal record included convictions for domestic assault in 2008 and assault in 2006.
Aaron said Talley would not have been involved in Wednesday's shooting if he had remained behind bars.
"You know, a 15 year sentence for a voluntary manslaughter conviction, and then seeing what we have here today, it's troubling," said Aaron.
Talley will be taken to jail when his medical condition allows for the transfer.

Car burglar Luna lassoed

Edward Luna

The Gang Unit’s 10 p.m. Saturday stop of a speeding pickup truck on Briley Parkway near Centennial Boulevard led to the apprehension of accused serial car burglar and fugitive Edward L. Luna, who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Luna, 22, was being sought on warrants charging him with breaking into three automobiles, one of them a police car, and is also a suspect in the burglaries of other law enforcement vehicles in the Nashville area early last week.  Luna, who was not carrying any identification last night, was asked his name at the scene of the traffic stop.  His reply to the officer:  “You know me, I’m all over the news.  I’m the one who broke into all the police cars and stole the guns.”  Later, after arriving at the West Precinct, Luna refused to be interviewed by detectives.

Found under tires in the back of the pickup truck was a green bag containing two semi-automatic pistols, more than 100 rounds of ammunition and magazines for the guns.  One of the guns was confirmed as being stolen from the SUV of a private citizen in South Nashville on July 21st, resulting in Luna also being charged with felony theft and unlawful gun possession.  Luna is spending his Sunday in the Metro Jail in lieu of $91,000 bond.  He remains under investigation.

Also in the pickup truck was 17-year-old Austin Dodd, an escapee from state custody who was believed by detectives to be accompanying Luna.  Dodd was taken to juvenile detention and booked on the escape charge.  Dodd denied involvement in the vehicle burglaries.

Beer: the slippery slope

As many as 20 additional police officers will hit Franklin streets this weekend with one mission: to detect and arrest impaired drivers. A Governor’s Highway Safety Office grant will be used to pay overtime to officers participating in the city-wide operation aimed at keeping Franklin streets safe.

MADD statistics, like “One in three people are involved in a DUI-related crash in their lifetime,” and “Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens; one out of three of those involve alcohol,” are sobering reminders of the dangers that drinking and driving pose.

DUI saturation patrols start tonight, and Franklin Police want to take an opportunity to encourage responsible driving throughout this weekend. If you get behind the wheel of a car and are caught driving impaired, the ride to jail that we give DUI offenders costs, on average, $10,000.

Booze it, lose it

On the evening of Friday, 03/15/2013, the Franklin Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at Mack Hatcher Boulevard near Spencer Creek Road.

Last year, the Governor’s Highway Safety Office awarded the Department with a $50,000 grant to use for anti-DUI initiatives including DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols, training, and equipment. Overtime for officers working this checkpoint will be paid by that grant.

According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, impaired driving and impaired-related crashes constitute one of the nation’s leading health problems. These events result in more deaths each year than do total homicides, and alcohol is a factor in 33% of all crashes in the United States.
